Growing Through Change
Maxwell's question challenges us to view every life circumstance as an opportunity for intentional growth rather than merely something to endure.
This quote emerged during one of John Maxwell's leadership seminars when he was developing content for his book Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn. Maxwell had observed how different leaders responded to organizational change and personal challenges. He noticed a distinct pattern: some leaders merely endured change while others intentionally used it as a catalyst for growth. This observation led him to create this simple question that has since become a cornerstone of his teaching on personal development and leadership growth.
To put this truth into action, consider several practical applications. When facing a difficult situation at work, pause and create a learning journal to document insights and lessons learned. During challenging personal relationships, set aside time each week to reflect on what the situation is teaching you about yourself and others. If you experience financial setbacks, develop a new budget while simultaneously improving your financial literacy. When facing health challenges, use the recovery time to read, learn, or develop new skills that don't require physical activity. The key is to intentionally look for growth opportunities within every challenge.
Biblical Reference: Romans 5:3-4 (NIV) - "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." This passage beautifully illustrates the growth process that can emerge from challenges. It shows us that God's design includes using difficulties as steppingstones toward spiritual and personal development.
Take the first step toward intentional growth through change by answering these questions:
What current challenge am I facing that could become a growth opportunity?
What specific skills or character traits could I develop through this situation?
Who could mentor or guide me through this growth process?
What resources (books, courses, relationships) do I need to maximize this growth opportunity?
How will I measure and track my growth through this change?
Schedule 30 minutes this week to reflect on these questions and create an action plan for growth. Consider reaching out to me for a complimentary discovery call to discuss how we can partner together to ensure you grow through your current changes rather than just going through them.
