Embracing New Dreams
Identify and confront age-related limiting beliefs, setting concrete goals regardless of life stage, and take immediate action steps, even if they seem small at first.
This inspiring quote from C.S. Lewis emerged during his later years as a professor at Oxford and Cambridge. Having experienced multiple career transitions himself - from academic to broadcaster, from atheist to Christian apologist, and from literary scholar to children's author - Lewis understood personally the power of reinvention. This quote particularly resonated when, at age 58, he married Joy Davidman and embarked on a new chapter of life that he never expected, demonstrating that significant life changes can happen at any age.
To put this truth into action, consider starting small but dreaming big. You might take an online course on a subject you've always been curious about, or write down three goals you've been hesitant to pursue due to age or timing concerns. Practice setting monthly micro-goals that build toward larger aspirations. For example, if you've always wanted to write a book, start by writing for 15 minutes each day. If you've dreamed of starting a business, begin by researching one aspect of your potential market each week. The key is to take consistent, intentional steps forward.
Biblical Reference: Philippians 3:13-14 - "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
This passage reinforces that our journey of growth and achievement is ongoing throughout life. Paul, writing this letter later in his life, demonstrates that age should never be a barrier to pursuing new goals and following God's calling.
Take time this week to evaluate where you might be holding back due to age-related concerns. What dreams have you shelved? Consider these questions:
What goal have you been putting off because you think you're "too old"?
What would you attempt if you knew age wasn't a factor?
Who in your life could serve as an accountability partner for pursuing a new dream?
What small step could you take in the next 24 hours toward a long-held dream?
How might your experience and wisdom actually give you an advantage in pursuing this goal?
Schedule a time to journal about these questions and set one concrete goal for the next 30 days. Would you like to schedule a discovery call to discuss how coaching could help you pursue your dreams regardless of your age?
